FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Colorado State women’s soccer program concluded its second-ever season with an end-of-the-year awards banquet to acknowledge both team and individual accolades. Junior forward Gianna Bertana earned the team’s Newcomer of the Year award, senior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman earned the team’s All-time Rammie award and sophomore midfielder Amy Eckert took home the team’s Player of the Year Award. All awards were voted on by their fellow teammates.

Bertana was honored as the Newcomer of the Year after making an immediate impact for the Rams as a transfer from Foothill College. In her first year in the program, tallied a team-most four goals and one assist in 19 starts. The junior forward was responsible for three game-winning goals, and now stands atop the team’s all-time goals scored record book.

Sherman, a senior from Vail, Colo., appeared in six matches with two starts, but it was her impact both on and off the field that earned her the distinguished honors of the All-time Rammie award. The recipient of the award embodies the true spirit of being a CSU student athlete with excellence in academics, athletics and community leadership. Since stepping into the Colorado State program last year as a walk-on junior, Sherman has become a crucial leader for the Rams in this period of transition and will now serve an internship under the coaching staff to develop her coaching skills.

The evening’s last award went to Eckert, who as a key cog in the midfield for the second-year Rams was named the team’s Player of the Year. A sophomore from Colorado Springs, Eckert started all 10 matches and was third on the team with 1,614 minutes played. In her second season, Eckert was second on the team with two goals, including a game-winner in the 94th minute against College of Charleston, while also providing crucial defensive plays for the Rams.

All three players were key in Colorado State’s success this past season. The Rams doubled their win total in Year 2, and picked up the program’s first-ever wins at home as the team moved back on campus to play at The Lagoon. Against the best teams in the conference, Colorado State was particularly tough. The Rams lost by just one goal to Utah State, Colorado College and New Mexico, and took Mountain West champions San Diego State to double overtime.
