DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado State swimming & diving team opened the 2014-15 season on Saturday, earning a split. The Rams defeated Nebraska Omaha and fell to host Denver.
The Rams began the meet in great position, winning the first two events behind first place finishes from Jessica Shepard (50 Backstroke; 26.50) and Cristina Bassani (50 Breaststroke; 29.35), respectively.
CSU also won the 50 Freestyle, with freshman Katie Kicklighter swimming to a time of 23.41 in her collegiate debut. The time was faster than any Ram swam the event during the 2013-14 season. Kicklighter, a High School All-American, also won the 100 Freestyle (51.60), while Shepard earned a second-place finish in the 200 Backstroke (2:06.27).
The Rams were extremely dominant on the boards, a trend that has carried over from last year. CSU went 1-2-3 on the 1-meter boards, with Mary Kate Hardy winning the event with a score of 255.20. Ariana Milone (254.35) and Erin Taylor (244.35) also placed, while Milone won the 3-meter event with a score of 298.88. Taylor, who was competing in her first collegiate meet, took second (257.55).
CSU will next compete on Friday against rival Wyoming. The home meet is an Orange Out.
