LARAMIE, Wyo. – Colorado State tennis completed the Wyoming Invitational Sunday with sophomore Lauren Mulhern’s victory in the finals of the Brown singles backdraw.

Mulhern earned her finals appearance with a victory over Elsje Beneke of Weber State, 6-4, 6-2. Mulhern then faced teammate Lindsay Butzer, who reached the finals match due to a default in the semifinals by Wyoming’s Paloma Navarro. Mulhern defeated Butzer, 6-0, 6-1, to give the Rams their first finals victory of the season.

After an injury to Tiffany Knop of Northern Colorado, CSU’s Veronika Wojakowska was placed into the finals match of the Gold singles backdraw. Wojakowska fell to Wyoming’s Sasa Nemcova, 6-4, 6-1.

Junior Caitlin Fluegge received a semifinals appearance in the Gold singles main draw after a victory over Greyce Farias of Weber State Saturday, 6-3, 6-2, but fell to Rebecca Berger of Wyoming, 6-2, 6-4, Sunday.

Junior Melissa Holzinger and senior Manar Al-Jazzaf teamed up in the doubles backdraw Saturday and defeated the team of Markay Mullen and Luiza Xavier of Northern Colorado, 8-3, to earn a semifinals match against the Northern Colorado team of Sydney Bell and Jenny Whateley. Holzinger and Al-Jazzaf defeated their Northern Colorado opponents, 8-4, but fell in the finals to Farias and Keya Jenkins of Weber State, 8-1.

“I thought our play in the (Wyoming) tournament was generally disappointing,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “The bright side is we learned some things that we need get better at. We need to work on some things for next week. I just don’t think we did what we were capable of.”

In Boulder, Colo., senior Laura Neal and sophomore Tori Arneson concluded their play in the CU Invitational, with a win in doubles and two losses in singles.

Neal and Arneson won Saturday’s Silver doubles consolation draw over the team of Shannon Young and Erlyn Rudico of Air Force, 8-5. Neal and Arneson lost their first doubles match Sunday, but defeated Erin Conley and Lindsey Mueller of Air Force, 8-0, in the second match of the day.

“I was not as disappointed with the CU results,” Messick said. “I thought we were competitive. The players we lost to were good.”
