The Colorado State women's basketball (7-11, 1-6 MWC) team fell to the 20th ranked and conference-leading BYU Cougars (17-1, 7-0 MWC) 70-54 on Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. The Rams were led by sophomore Sara Hunter who scored 15 points, all from long distance. Dani Kubik led the way for BYU, also scoring 15 points in the contest.
Colorado State was held to a season-low shooting performance on the afternoon, making just 17-of-59 field goals for 28.8 percent, including a season-worst 21.1 percent shooting in the first half. The Cougars shot 40.9 percent (27-66) from the floor in the game.
The Rams found themselves down early in the contest as BYU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead just more than two minutes into the game. The Rams kept it close, however, going on a six-to-two run to cut the lead to one, 7-6 with 15 minutes remaining in the half. After surviving a 7-0 run by the Cougars, the Rams responded with a three by Sara Hunter that started a 6-2 CSU run. At that point, the Rams trailed by four points, 16-12.
The Cougars turned up the defensive intensity in the final 10 minutes of the first half, and their offense put together a 16-0 run to push the lead to 20 points, 31-12 with 6:46 remaining in the half. The Rams went into the half, trailing by 21 points, the largest deficit to that point, as BYU's leading scorer, Amrbosia Anderson, tallied the final eight points for the Cougars.
The Rams came out of the locker room and cut into the BYU lead in a hurry with two quick buckets from senior Lindsay Thomas and freshman Casie Shepherd to bring the game back under 20 points. Shepherd finished two points shy of tying her career high with 12 points in the game. The Rams deficit lingered around the 20-point mark throughout most of the rest of the game.
The Rams did not quit, however, closing out the game on a 15-6 run of their own. It was not enough however, as the Rams still dropped their sixth-straight game since opening up conference action with a victory over San Diego State at Moby Arena.
Next up, the Rams will return home to Fort Collins to take on in-state rival Air Force on Feb. 2 before heading out on the road to face the San Diego State Aztecs.
