A strong performance at the net led the Colorado State volleyball team to a three-game sweep over Virginia Tech in the Hilton Classic in Moby Arena. The Rams won 31-29, 30-24, 30-26 to even their season record at 3-3, while the Hokies fall to 1-4.
The Rams tallied 17.0 blocks in the match, with freshman setter Ashley Fornstrom setting a career-high with four blocks, senior outside hitter Tess Rogers tying her career-high with three solo blocks, sophomore right-side hitter Tonya Mokelki notching a career-high four blocks, and seniors Casey Bauer and Dre Downs chipping in five stops each. Sophomore transfer Amanda Fahnestock led the team and tied her career-high with six blocks in the match.
"We blocked very well today," said head coach Tom Hilbert. "I thought we also did a good job of spreading the ball around."
Rogers led the Rams with 14 kills, while Mokelki and Downs each had 10 and Downs led the match with a .450 (10-1-20) hitting percentage. Junior libero Katherine Whitney led the match with 16 digs and she and freshman middle blocker each had one ace, while Bauer also had 10 digs on the morning.
Virginia Tech was led by Jen Albrecht and Sarah Munoz with 12 kills each, while Munoz and Amanda Cloyd each recorded 11 digs and Katie Esbrook had a Hokies' high with three blocks.
