Keys to Success Remain Basic For CSU Football

It might be the 11th game of the 2005 season - some three months since Colorado State's football team begun workouts - but Rams' coach Sonny Lubick says the team's keys to success Saturday at UNLV remain basic.

"We have to do the basics: blocking and tackling. Our focus is to go out, play well, and look sharp. We have to get back in the groove," said Lubick Wednesday following a two-hour workout.

The Rams enter Saturday's game at Sam Boyd Stadium 5-5 overall, 4-3 in the Mountain West Conference. UNLV is 2-8, 1-6. With a win, the Rams become bowl eligible for the 11th time in Lubick's 13 seasons as the Rams' head coach. Also with a win, the Rams stand in line to receive one of the league's three guaranteed bowl invitations, or perhaps another slot at a venue unfulfilled by another conference's commitment.

The MWC has agreements with the Las Vegas Bowl, Emerald Bowl in San Francisco and the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego.

"We can't control that," said Lubick of a potential bowl bid. "We have to go out and win the game, and worry about the rest afterwards. We need to come out, play with resolve. We need to run the ball, throw it to the right guy, and play good defense."

The Rams are out to break a two-game losing streak and put themselves in position to earn a bowl trip. Saturday's game begins at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT, and can be heard on the Colorado State Sports Network, including flagship station KIIX (600 AM) in Fort Collins and KNUS (710 AM) in Denver.
