Elrick van Eck is starting his fourth season as the assistant coach with the Colorado State men’s golf program. van Eck has been instrumental to the program’s continued rise, not only with on-course coaching as CSU has finished as Mountain West runner-up the last three seasons, the best consecutive season finishes in program history. He also has played important roles in the recruiting of Parathakorn Suyasri and Jack Ainscough, two then-freshmen who were in the Rams’ NCAA Regional lineup in 2017-18, and Oscar Teiffel and Davis, two freshmen who are in the lineup in 2018-19, making four of the six golfers that headed to the 2019 NCAA Regionals for the Rams’ team effort. The two freshman classes were ranked 15th and seventh in 2018 and 2019, respectively, for their contributions to the Rams’ scoring during the season and Teiffel was named Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year in 2019.
Prior to joining the staff in 2016-17, van Eck spent three years as the assistant coach of the Florida Tech men’s and women’s golf teams. Throughout van Eck’s stint, both programs secured a combined five NCAA Division II Regional Championship berths, including three straight on the women’s side.
In 2014-15, van Eck worked closely with freshman Gaelen Trew, who became Florida Tech’s very first men’s golfer to individually qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championship after edging out West Georgia’s Kevin Clarke in a sudden-death playoff at the regional tournament.
Van Eck, who is from Pretoria, South Africa, was a former collegiate golfer at Shorter University and Northwood University, and has won numerous junior college and amateur events throughout his career. During his freshman season in 2007-08 at Shorter, van Eck was named Third Team All-American by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He also earned All-Region and All-Conference honors in the same year.
In the fall of 2010, he arrived at Northwood and played golf for three semesters before graduating in December 2011. He was selected to the All-Region and All-Conference teams following his junior campaign. During his senior season at Northwood, van Eck was ranked in the Top-25 on Golfstat Cup for all collegiate levels – NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA. He was also awarded Northwood’s Athletic Leadership Award in his senior season and holds the record for the lowest single-round score for men’s golf at Northwood, posting a 65 in 2011.
Prior to his collegiate career, van Eck cracked the Top-30 in the South African amateur rankings, and was ranked sixth in the nation by the end of his junior career. He also represented his South African province, playing as one of eight golfers for Gauteng North on both the junior level and under-23 teams. He played on the under-23 team in 2006 and 2007, captaining in his last year.
