Led by junior Connor Jones' runner-up finish, the Rams earned significant wins over five teams above them in the Golfstat rankings along with four Mountain West foes and in-state rival CU

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Colorado State rebounded after a tough opening round with its two best rounds of the year to tie for third at the 2022 Wyoming Cowboy Classic Tuesday. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Wyoming, was played at Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course (Par 72 - 7,334 yds) in Chandler, Ariz.

The Rams were in a tie for 13th after the first round on Monday with a 1-over 289, but the five got it rolling on the second 18 and moved up to a tie for fourth when the round was suspended for darkness. The Rams came back out Tuesday morning and finished off the round at an 11-under 277. CSU then improved on that in the final round with a season low-tying 275, to finish at 23-under 841 in a tie with Nevada. San Diego State took home the team title at 39-under 825, with Long Beach State in second at 26-under 838. CSU and Nevada followed with UNLV rounding out the top five teams in the 25-team field at 18-under 846.

The 13-under in the final round is a season best for the Rams and the lowest under-par score since CSU shot 17-under in the opening round of the 2019 Saint Mary's Invitational. It is also tied for the third lowest final round, relative to par, since 1999-2000, with the top mark a 16-under 272 at the SCVB Pacific Invitational on Oct. 31, 2012 in head coach Christian Newton's first year at the helm. Additionally, the 23-under total for the 54 holes is the 14th-best under-par in program history, as all five Rams went under par in each of the two final rounds in the event.

Colorado State picked up a significant number of wins against teams above them in the current rankings, including No. 19 Kansas, No. 53 UC Davis, No. 68 TCU and No. 78 Iowa State. The Rams also earned victories over conference rivals Fresno State, Wyoming, Utah State and UNLV and in-state rival Colorado.

The Rams were led by junior Connor Jones with his best collegiate 54-hole placing, tying for runner-up at 12-under 204, one shot back of medalist Isaac Rodea of Long Beach State. His 12-under total is tied for ninth in CSU's record book for 54-hole, under-par score, as he earned his third top-10 and fourth top-20 finish of the season.

Senior Davis Bryant also had a top-15 finish, tying for 11th at 8-under 208. This was his fourth top-20 finish of the year and 17th in 35 CSU career events. Sophomore Rasmus Hjelm tied for 26th with a season-best 2-under 214, shooting a pair of 2-under 70s in the final two rounds, both season lows. Senior Oscar Teiffel was next in a tie for 40th at a season-low even-par 216 that included his two best rounds of the year, a 3-under 69 in the second and a 2-under 70 in the final round. Freshman Christoph Bleier rounded out CSU's effort in a tie for 58th at 2-over 218, but was also solid in the final two rounds, with a 1-under 71 and 3-under 69, respectively.

"The guys had a great week," Newton commented. "I'm really proud of their effort, especially after a rough start in the first round. Everybody shot under par in the last two rounds which was awesome. Congrats to Connor on his runner-up finish as well. This is the first time we've putted well as a team and the result shows. I'm excited to see what we can do in the next three events to close out the regular season."

The Rams are quickly back on the course on Mon.-Wed., April 11-13 at the 75th-Annual Western Intercollegiate, hosted by San Jose State University at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif. The three-day, 54-hole event, which is a play-six, count-five tournament, will be nationally televised all three days on Golf Channel.
