CSU improved six shots in its second round to lead by 2, while the junior has a 3-shot lead
BREMERTON, Wash. – Junior Connor Jones continued his solid play as both he and Colorado State are leading 2022 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship through the second round of play Saturday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, is being played at Gold Mountain Golf Club's Olympic Course (Par 72 – 7,115 yards) in Bremerton, Wash.
Â
On a cool and overcast day, Colorado State went off in the final wave and improved on yesterday's opening round, today shooting a 14-under 274 to post a 36-hole total of 22-under 554, two shots ahead of No. 50 San Diego State at 20-under 556 after their 15-under 273 today. No. 34 Nevada is third at 9-under 567, with Boise State at 5-under 571 and San Jose State at even-par 576 completing the top five teams.
Â
Jones continued to put it together, as he had eight birdies to just two bogeys today to record a season-low 6-under 66 and sit at 11-under 133, three shots ahead of Youssef Guezzale of San Diego State and Nevada's Trey Davis. Senior Davis Bryant is tied for fifth at 5-under 139 after a 3-under 69 on the day that included an eagle on the par-5 6th. Sophomore Rasmus Hjelm cut four shots off in his second round to post a 4-under 68 and get to 4-under 140 in a tie for seventh. Freshman Christoph Bleier posted his second straight 1-under 71 and is tied for 12th at 2-under 140, while redshirt-freshman Gavin Hagstrom is tied for 36th at 6-over 150.
Â
"I couldn't be happier with our performance today," head coach Christian Newton said. "All you can ask is to give yourself a chance on the final day and we've done that nicely. I'm proud of their fight and hope they realize how special of an experience tomorrow is going to be regardless."
Â
The event will conclude with the final round Sunday, with the Rams starting on No. 1 at 11 a.m. and playing with San Diego State and Nevada, with the team champion earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
