Suyasri, Staiano among top three individuals as CSU shoots record-setting 18 in the afternoon
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After shooting a 1-over in the opening round of the day, the Colorado State men's golf squad came back in the afternoon with a vengeance, shooting a tournament record 14-under round to take an 11-shot lead after 36 holes of the Ram Masters Invitational presented by Pedersen Toyota, Sept. 17. The two-day, 54-hole event, hosted by the Rams, is being played at Fort Collins Country Club (Par 70 – 7,218 yards) in Fort Collins, Colo.
The host Rams struggled to get things going in the first 18 holes, shooting a 1-over 281 and trailing Illinois State by one shot when the afternoon began. However, the four scoring players all were at least 2-under on the round, combining for 21 birdies to post a 14-under 266, surpassing last year's CSU record performance by two shots, and finished the day at 13-under 547. Illinois State will be paired with the Rams as the Redbirds are currently second at 2-under 558. South Dakota and Northern Colorado are tied for third at 8-over 568, with Long Beach State rounding out the top five teams at 9-over 569.
"I think we came out a little tight in the opening round," head coach Christian Newton said. "We finished the morning round strong and just kept going in the afternoon. They played awesome this afternoon, which turned out to be a tournament record score. I loved seeing them get better as the tournament went along. We look forward to tomorrow's round with a chance to claim the title."
Individually, four Rams are in the top 11 players, led by sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri who is in second at 6-under 134. Suyasri had a 2-under morning round and followed it up with 4-under 66 in the afternoon that included five birdies. Senior Jake Staiano is one shot back at 4-under 136 in third, including a 5-under 65 in the second 18. Junior AJ Ott is tied for seventh at 2-under 138, while freshman Davis Bryant is tied for 11th at 1-under 139, having posted a 3-under 67 late in the day. Sophomore Cullen Plousha completes the team effort in a tie for 7th at 3-over 143. Wyoming's Dan Starzinski carries a one-shot lead over Suyasri into the final round, as the Cowboy shot a 7-under 133 for the day.
