CSU Places Eighth At National Invitational Tournament

Rams finish at 9-under, led by A.J. Ott's tie for 20th.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Colorado State men's golf slipped three spots on the final day and finished eighth at the 2018 National Invitational Tournament, Feb. 25. Featuring 11 teams ranked in the top 100 according to Golfweek, the two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Arizona, was played at OMNI Tucson National's Catalina Course (Par 72 – 7,200 yards) in Tucson, Ariz.
When play was halted on Sunday, the Rams were 6-under for the second round and 12-under for the tournament. CSU finished off the round at 5-under 283 in a tie for sixth. However, several late holes cost the Rams strokes in the final round and they posted a 2-over 290 to finish at 9-under 855 in eighth. UNLV won the tournament at 50-under 814, eight shots better than runner-up Arizona State. Arizona was third at 34-under 830 with North Texas (28-under 836) and Iowa State (24-under 840) rounding out the top five teams.
Individually, the Rams were led by sophomore AJ Ott who tied for 20th at 5-under 211. It was Ott's fifth top-20 finish in five events this year, as he shot two under-par rounds in the tournament. Freshman Parathakorn Suyasri also had a pair of under-par rounds to finish two shots back of Ott at 3-under 213 in a tie for 33rd. Junior Jake Staiano and senior Colton Yates both moved up in the standings in the final round, eventually tying for 53rd at 3-over 29, with Yates shooting the team's low round of the final 18 with a 2-under 70. Senior Max Oelfke was one shot back at 4-over 220, tied for 61st. UNLV's Shintaro Ban won the medalist honors at 16-under 200, defeating a trio of golfers by two shots.
The Rams return to the course on Mon.-Tue., March 12-13, playing at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif.
