TUCSON, Ariz. - The Colorado State men's golf team finished seventh at the 2017 National Invitational Tournament, Feb. 27-28. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Arizona, was played at OMNI Tucson National Resort Course (Par 72 - 7,200 yards) in Tucson, Ariz. The course is also the site of the 2017 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship in April.
The Rams shot a 1-over 289 in the final 18 holes and slipped one spot to seventh at even-par 864, one shot back of San Francisco. No. 58 Iowa State won the team title at 32-under 832, five shots ahead of No. 27 Arizona State and No. 16 UNLV in a tie for second at 27-under 837. UTEP, ranked 48th by Golfweek, was fourth at 16-under 848, with host Arizona rounding out the top five teams at 6-under 858. The Rams finished ahead of Mountain West schools Wyoming, San Jose State and Nevada in the tournament.
Individually, the Rams' top finisher was sophomore Jake Staiano, who tied for 25th at 1-under 215. Senior Blake Cannon had the squad's best final round with a 2-under 70, tying for 31st at 1-over 217. Junior Max Oelfke was next one shot back of Cannon at 2-over 218, tied for 36th, after a 1-under 71 in the last 18. Senior Jimmy Makloski tied for 51st at 6-over 222, while freshman A.J. Ott tied for 67th at 10-over 226.
"Overall, it's a good start to the spring with lots of positives to build upon," head coach Christian Newton said. "Jake played much better than his finish shows as he was close to a great finish. It was good to see Blake play well his last two rounds. Once Max got early jitters out of the way, he was under-par for the week. Jimmy's round yesterday afternoon was huge for us. Other than one hole, A.J. had a much improved outing as compared to his fall."
Colorado State will head next to Chula Vista, Calif. to play in the Lamkin Grips SD Classic, March 14-15. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the San Diego Country Club and is being co-hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego.
