TUCSON, Ariz.- Colorado State came out of the National Invitational Tournament with an eighth-place finish Tuesday. Mike Sorenson led the Rams lineup.
Sorenson finished the last two rounds just 1-over-par. He finished the tournament in a tie for 15th place and carded a 77-71-72--220 (+6). Behind him was Ryan Peterson. Peterson was even-par in his final round and finished 17th. He finished the tournament with a 75-74-72--221 (+7).
CSU finished in eighth place out of the 15-team field. The Rams were 8-under-par through the first nine holes in the final round Tuesday. They finished the round with a team score of 292 (+4). The team combined for a 302-294-292--888 (+39) in the tournament.
While the Rams began the day in strong fashion, and got great effort form Sorenson and Peterson, they didn’t finish as well as Head Coach Jamie Bermel hoped.
“We got off to a great start today and were 8-under-par through nine holes,” said Bermel. “Unfortunately, we made a few bad swings, a couple bad decisions and just didn’t play well the last six holes. Mike and Ryan played well but we needed good scores from everyone to move up.”
Tulsa won the tournament with an 11-over-par 867. SMU took second with an 874 (+18) followed by Arizona with an 876 (+20).
Jonathan Khan from Arizona won the tournament with a 4-under par 210. In second was Stephan Carney of Tulsa with a 211 (-3) and behind him was Wyoming’s Gabe Maier at 212 (-2).
CSU’s Zahkai Brown finished the tournament in a tie for 34th place and carded a 75-76-74--225 (+11). Kory Harrell shot a 75-79-74--228 (+14) and tied for 49th. Kirby Pettitt placed 51st with a 79-73-77--229 (+15).
“We have about 10 days off and we need to use that time to continue to work on our short game and sharpen up a bit,” Bermel said. “Hopefully we will be peaking when we return to Tucson in May to defend our MWC title.”
Colorado State will have until April 4 to prepare for the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Phoenix, Ariz.
