LOS ANGELES, Calif. – On Friday the Rams kicked off conference play for the 2011 season at the Burns Center as they took on Sonoma State and the host team, No. 6 Loyola Marymount.

CSU earned its first victory within its conference, a 10-8 win over Sonoma State, while letting LMU slip away in the second half, losing 11-7.

The loss by the Rams (7-9, 1-2 Western Water Polo Association) to LMU (12-4, 3-0 WWPA) was the second this season to the Lions but this four-goal defeat was much better than the first time these teams met. The win against Sonoma State (5-19, 1-6 WWPA) marks the first WWPA victory for the Rams this season, something they will continue to look for as the week goes on.

“It was a good day but there are some things we can work on,” said coach Mike Moody. “It was good to get that first conference win.”

The win against Sonoma State was led by a pair of hat tricks coming from Orsi Nadasdy and Natalie Berge. Caroline Young also recorded a hat trick against LMU. Despite going 1-1 on the day, Moody knows his team can do better.

“We came out a little rusty after the week off,” said Moody. “The girls are getting there but we need to be better.”

When asked what his team did wrong on the day and what it could work on for Saturday and other future games, Moody could not point out one big problem.

“We really just need to work on all of the small things, but it’s hard to nail it down to just one thing.”

The Rams have been on the verge of earning a spot in the national rankings for the past three weeks. Finishing this tournament 3-1 would definitely help the team push its way into the rankings.

“We are coming up on a critical moment for both this season and for the history of this program,” said Moody. “We really just need to get over this hump.”

CSU finishes the tournament tomorrow as it takes on Cal State San Bernardino at 10 a.m. MT, followed by Whittier at 1:45 p.m. MT.
