FAIRFAX, Calif. – Wrapping up the fall portion of its season Tuesday, the Colorado State men’s golf team finished the Alister Mackenzie Invitational in sixth place.

Zahkai Brown led the final-round effort for the Rams. Brown carded four birdies on his way to a 3-under-par round, finishing in 11th place with a 206 – nine strokes behind individual medalist Alex Kang of San Diego State.

Head Coach Jamie Bermel hopes that Brown can carry that level of play into the spring.

“Zahkai had a good week,” he said. “It was a good tournament for him. Hopefully that will give him some confidence going into the spring semester.”

Brown’s effort wasn’t enough to move the Rams up the ranks. They finished sixth in the 16-team field with an 841 (-11).

Also finishing under par Tuesday was Kory Harrell. He shot a 70 to finish with a 1-over-par 214 and a share of 45th. Ryan Peterson, while recording a 72 on Tuesday, still finished with a three-round total of 209 in 34th place.

Scott Newton placed 54th in the 75-man field. Newton was 3-under par heading into Tuesday’s action, but carded a 6-over-par front nine. He would recover with an even-par back nine for a 216.

Kirby Pettitt finished with a 217 after a rough final round. He went 4-over par Tuesday after being even headed into the day.

Bermel explained what the team needs to do to take its next step forward.

“This week we just didn’t make enough birdies and didn’t putt the ball very well,” said Bermel. “To compete with these top teams you have to make more birdies. We had to make more birdies and we just didn’t get it done.”

Host Cal-Berkeley won the team title at the tournament with an 804, followed by San Diego State (806) and Oregon State (825). Complete results are available on golfstat.com.

The Rams will not compete again until Feb. 20, when they head to Phoenix, Ariz., for the Dual in the Desert.
