Valerie Lang-McComb is a great example of the early days of successful swimming athletes in the old High Country Athletic Conference. She immediately made an impact on CSU swimming by helping her team win the 1984 conference championship in her freshman year. Under the guidance of legendary coach John Mattos, Lang won a total of six individual conference championships and three relay championships. She won eight All-HCAC honors, and in 1986 she placed eighth in the nation at the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke. In 1987, Lang helped guide her team to another conference title in the HCAC and was named the collegiate swimmer of the year in 1987 and 1988 by the Sportswomen of Colorado.Â
