Lavern Kohls, also known as Nick, is among one of the best wrestlers in school history and ranks as one of the few CSU wrestlers who have placed among the top in the NCAA championships. Competing in the 191-pound class, Kohls placed second in the nation at the 1961 NCAA championships. His showing during his junior year earned him All-American honors. He returned to the NCAA tournament in his senior year of 1962, but was knocked out of the competition in the third round. In football, Kohls played guard and is one of the few men to have played both football and wrestled for former head coach Tuffy Mullison.
